Duke Children's Campus among best in Durham child care
Durham, NC - Already among the top-rated daycare facilities in Durham, the Duke Children's Campus is set to stay among the best.
Following a recent accreditation and license-renewal process, the Children's Campus facility has been awarded a five-star license - the highest available - and earned a reaccreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The Children's Campus has held both ratings for about a decade, said director Valerie Person.
"This gives us a high level of pride since we're very proud of the hard work all our teachers do," Person said. "We've worked hard to maintain a quality center where we offer great learning and social opportunities and parents and children are very comfortable."
Located at 511 Alexander Ave., next to the Duke University Police Department, the Children's Campus provides child care exclusively for faculty, staff and employees of Duke University and the Health System, as well as a limited number of graduate and professional students enrolled at Duke University.
The star-rating process is handled every three years by the state's Division of Child Development. Facilities can earn between one and five stars and are based on the education of staff members and standards of each facility's programs.
The Duke Children's Campus received six out of seven points in both areas of assessment and an additional "quality point" for benefits offered to its staff of about 40 teachers, administrators and support staff. The Children's Campus is among 54 five-star child care facilities in Durham, out of a total of 148 facilities with stared licenses.
Accreditation from the NAEYC is provided every five years and was completed through a self-study with surveys of teachers and parents. Representatives then came to the Children's Campus for a day of observation. Along with the Children's Campus, there are currently five other child care facilities in Durham with a NAEYC accreditation.
"All of us at the Children's Campus are excited to get recognized for the hard work we're putting in day-in and day-out," Person said.
