Duke Eateries Receive Awards for Sustainability

Eight Duke eateries have received Green Dining Awards for their environmental efforts

Eight Duke eateries are receiving recognition for their environmental efforts in the annual Green Dining Awards.

The awards were created by the Students for Sustainable Living program.  Students use a scorecard of sustainable practices to determine winners based on criteria like use of local and organic food, energy and water conservation and composting to reduce landfill waste.

The high-scoring Nasher Cafe and Refectory at Duke Law won the "Best Overall" award. Subway and Au Bon Pain were recognized in the "Best Chain Restaurant" category and The Refectory at Duke Divinity School received the award for "Best Non-chain Restaurant".  Joe Van Gogh won the "Best Cafe" award.

Special awards were given to Saledelia for outstanding sustainability practices in the "Most Innovative" category and to Quenchers in the "Most Improved" category for consistently incorporating new sustainability measures.

To determine winners, student employees of Sustainable Duke met with a manager from each eatery to discuss how "green" each location is.  Each winning eatery will be presented with a plaque made of bamboo.
