Fifth Duke Leadership Academy Begins
Nearly year-long academy nurtures a pipeline of future leaders at Duke
President Richard H. Brodhead kicked off the fifth Duke Leadership Academy class Wednesday by describing part of his leadership journey.
Among lessons learned along the way, he said, is that people support what they create, and when excluded from the decision-making process, they are not vested in the success of a new venture. What keeps Brodhead up at night is not worrying about mistakes made but opportunities missed. "What if I didn't do the things that would let the university live up to its potential?" he asked.
The Duke Leadership Academy, which is sponsored by Duke Human Resources, is a nearly year-long program designed to stimulate personal and professional growth and nurture a pipeline of future leaders at Duke. The curriculum is based upon best practices from Fuqua/COLE Leadership Model, and management and leadership styles and behaviors.
During the academy, participants hear from guest speakers and receive a 360-assessment and instruction on leadership principles.
"We want to groom and grow our own," said Keisha Williams, director of Learning and Organization Development at Duke. "The hope is that, upon completion of the academy, scholars will have more confidence and more knowledge and an understanding of what it takes to be a leader at Duke."
