News Tip: President Right to Replace Hagel, Military Expert Says

Professor Charlie Dunlap comments on Chuck Hagel resigning as U.S. defense secretary

On Monday, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel resigned under pressure.         Charlie Dunlap Jr.•    Quote: "The president’s move makes sense. Mr. Hagel was brought on board to facilitate the downsizing of defense, but world events are causing a rethinking of the wisdom of doing so. The skills required to address the range of today’s very serious threats do not, in my view, play to Mr. Hagel’s strengths.   “As to Hagel’s replacement, I believe the president will look for a Democrat this time. Bob Work, the highly regarded current Deputy Secretary, would have to be on the short list, but we also could see a woman like Michele Flournoy -- who previously served as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy -- picked, as she has exceptional qualifications and is, I think, well-respected by both parties.”•    Bio: Charlie Dunlap Jr. is a professor of the practice at Duke Law School and executive director of Duke's Center on Law, Ethics and National Security. He specializes in warfare policy and strategy, cyber-warfare, military commissions, counterinsurgency, nuclear issues and air power. Dunlap is a former deputy judge advocate general of the U.S. Air Force who retired from the military in 2010 as a major general.http://www.law.duke.edu/fac/dunlap•    Archive video interview (different subject): http://www.wral.com/news/local/video/13737677/•    For additional comment, contact Dunlap at:dunlap@law.duke.edu
